Lian Guo (co-host) facilitates a great discussion on subsistence fishing. Collaborative transdisciplinary research efforts are an integrative way to approach socio-ecological fisheries issues. Meet a team of six researchers who completed a transdisciplinary fisheries research project, all while they were graduate students! In part one of two episodes, the team will share how they studied this research question: how are the fishing practices of urban marine subsistence fishers acknowledged and protected by urban and environmental policy?

Hannah and Ben discuss getting started in fisheries research, the mysteries of aquatic systems, and the importance of hot coffee.

Hannah is a PhD student at the University of Florida where she is studying the spatial ecology of gag, a highly valued commercial and recreational grouper fishery in the Gulf of Mexico. Kadie and Hannah chat about the importance of field schools, how Hannah became interested in spatial ecology, and what drew Hannah to becoming a new host of the Fisheries Podcast.
Main point: You don’t have to grow up fishing to become a fisheries biologist!

In this episode, new host Anders Halverson interviews a new host on the fisheries podcast, Zach Crum. Zach grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia where he developed a passion for fishing and the marine environment at an early age. He took his passion for angling and all things fish to Virginia Tech, where he studied marine fish conservation and completed several internships pertaining to fisheries science. Since graduating with his Bachelor's in 2019, Zach has worked as a fisheries technician for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in California, where he currently works on the Central Valley Steelhead Monitoring Program. He is particularly interested in fisheries ecology and conservation and will be starting his Master's at Salisbury University in Maryland this fall.
Main Point: Why doesn't everyone want to be a fisheries biologist?!

Amie Robison, a.k.a. The Pond Lady, currently works alongside her husband at Robison Wildlife Solutions doing nuisance wildlife control and pond consulting. To say that she has followed an interesting path to get to this point would be underselling it. In this episode we hear just a few of her stories, from doing fisheries fieldwork with her mother to stocking Tiger Muskie in Oklahoma, working with private pond owners to rescuing four mini-pigs.
