D&I Podcast Ep.7 - “Two‐Eyed Seeing”: An Indigenous Framework to Transform Fisheries
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
Lian Guo and Aaron Bunch collaborate on a great conversation with Dr. Andrea Reid. Have you ever thought about the history of the land you are on right now? Look around you. Many places are named after Native American/Indigenous Peoples. Dr. Reid discusses many important aspects of the relationship between Native/Indigenous Peoples and Fisheries. She discusses her open access paper which defines the concept of Two‐Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk in Mi’kmaw) which embraces “learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of mainstream knowledges and ways of knowing, and to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all,” as envisaged by Elder Dr. Albert Marshall.
Dr. Reid and co-authors put together a great reading list as mentioned in the podcast.
20 Essential Reads to Enable Two-Eyed Seeing in Aquatic Research and Management

103 - Muskie, Photography, and Fish Passage with Dr. Sean Landsman
Saturday Jan 09, 2021
Saturday Jan 09, 2021
This week Nick chats with Dr. Sean Landsman. We cover his love of muskie fishing and how he became hooked on targeting the Esocid. That passion eventually led him to Carlton University where he completed a Master's degree studying the effects of catch and release angling on muskie. He returned to Illinois, worked with trout but eventually made his way back to Canada for a Ph.D. program at the University of Prince Edward Island. There is a neat story on how he ended up on PEI and in his program. In between all of this Sean picked up a new hobby: underwater photography. We discuss how he got started in that, his dream shot, and he even shares some advice for aspiring photogs. Check out some of Sean's photos at www.seanlandsmanphotography.com. Enjoy!
Main point: Be empathetic!

100 - The Fintennial!
Saturday Dec 19, 2020
Saturday Dec 19, 2020
This is the ONE HUNDREDTH episode of The Fisheries Podcast! In honor of these feat, we are offering 25% off our Teespring store now until the end of the year using promo code 25OFF.
In this special episode we take a trip down memory lane and hear a clip from the first episode about how and why the show was started. I originally planned to do a best of episode with clips of my favorite questions and answers but how can you pick from so many special episodes and condense that down to one episode. It was difficult but I did end up pulling some clips from most of our past episodes and compiling them in this special episode that highlights just how amazing each of our guests and the entire field of fisheries is.
I hope that you enjoy this special episode and we look forward to talking to many of you in the next 100 episodes! We would also like to hear from you on social media with pictures of you enjoying the show or our gear, or just tell us some of your favorite parts from the podcast!
A HUGE THANK YOU to all the past guests and each and every listener. A special Thank You to Brett, Julie, and Sue for volunteering to help with hosting duties.

099: Angela Collins has a passion for Florida reef fish
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
Sunday Dec 13, 2020
This week Julie chats with Dr. Angela Collins from Florida Sea Grant about her long history of angler-involved research, her love of all Florida reef fishes, and how being a mom has allowed her to become a "recovering work-a-holic". Plus we chat diving stories, our amazement over fish species that change sex, and a host of other topics. This episodes also includes one of the most harrowing and amazing field stories I've ever heard!
As a note: I let my 3-year-old watch videos next to me while we were recording because he wanted to say hi to Angela. You will definitely hear times when he wanted to be a part of the conversation.
Her main point: make space for a variety of voices!

Saturday Dec 05, 2020
This week Nick chats with Jason Schooley and Dr. Dennis Scarnecchia about their recent paper titled "Bowfishing in the United States: History, status, ecological impact, and a need for management." The paper was in short inspired by the U.S. Open Bowfishing Championship's visit to Oklahoma and the author's discovery that there was not much in the way of bowfishing literature out there for fisheries managers. They attempt to outline what is and isn't known about the sport and the species it targets in this paper. I hope that you enjoy my conversation with Jason and Dennis and their article!
Main Point: All fish deserve our respect and attention!
