126 - Meet New Host Zach Crum
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
In this episode, new host Anders Halverson interviews a new host on the fisheries podcast, Zach Crum. Zach grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia where he developed a passion for fishing and the marine environment at an early age. He took his passion for angling and all things fish to Virginia Tech, where he studied marine fish conservation and completed several internships pertaining to fisheries science. Since graduating with his Bachelor's in 2019, Zach has worked as a fisheries technician for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in California, where he currently works on the Central Valley Steelhead Monitoring Program. He is particularly interested in fisheries ecology and conservation and will be starting his Master's at Salisbury University in Maryland this fall.
Main Point: Why doesn't everyone want to be a fisheries biologist?!

Amie Robison, a.k.a. The Pond Lady, currently works alongside her husband at Robison Wildlife Solutions doing nuisance wildlife control and pond consulting. To say that she has followed an interesting path to get to this point would be underselling it. In this episode we hear just a few of her stories, from doing fisheries fieldwork with her mother to stocking Tiger Muskie in Oklahoma, working with private pond owners to rescuing four mini-pigs. Listen in to hear all about that and more!
Main Point: Every living system is relatable!

Nick is flying solo in this episode! After recently reading Silent Spring Nick asks himself what is his Silent Spring issue, what is one issue he'd want a book written to educate and inform the masses. He settled on the rebranding of "rough" fish and highlights some of the good examples of people and information out there already getting the ball rolling towards change.

Ellie Weise is finishing her master's work at Michigan State University. She has been developing genomic and computational tools to assess populations within an adaptive management framework, specifically focusing on the use of effective population size estimates and pedigree reconstruction to assess sea lamprey spawning populations. We discuss what exactly she is doing and how that information can be used to help manage invasive Sea Lamprey in the Great Lakes. Ellie also works in outreach as a writer and co-host of the science comedy podcast 'An Everyday Dissection.' We talk about her podcast and some of the episode topics and where to find it, as well as some of Ellie's other science outreach experience.
