For this week's episode of The Fisheries Podcast, co-host Mirella Leis chats with guest Felippe Abbatepaulo about a social enterprise that is making waves in southern Brazil. 'Olha o Peixe' is changing the way we consume fish, benefitting small-scale fishing communities while also inspiring others to do the same.
Main point: Fishing better is not fishing more.
Felippe Abbatepaulo (Pepe) is an Oceanographer and holds a Master of Science degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries. He has worked with both artisanal and industrial fisheries and conducted scientific research prior to joining Olha o Peixe, where he works as Operational Manager. In his current role, he aims to work with and alongside fishers for a sustainable fisheries future.

This week Hannah catches up with fellow University of Florida Ph.D. student, Adam Searles. A fourth generation Floridian from Brevard County, he decided to study marine ecology to solve the environmental issues plaguing the Indian River Lagoon system. Adam shares his dissertation research identifying the mechanisms driving community-level differences between seagrass and macroalgae-dominated habitats with major implications for fisheries ecology. So far, his work includes studies on competition between native sheepshead populations and a poleward expanding competitor and seagrass and macroalgae fish and invertebrate monitoring.
Main Point: Be kind and remember that nothing does just one thing.

In this episode Anders Halverson talks to Dr. Jennifer Gumm about efforts to conserve the Devils Hole pupfish. These remarkable fish live only in one small cave in the middle of the Mojave Desert--perhaps the smallest range of any vertebrate in the world. As one of the first species listed under the Endangered Species Act, these fish have faced threats from many directions over the decades. Dr. Gumm is the manager of the Ash Meadows Conservation Facility, where a refuge population of the fish are maintained.

D&I Podcast Ep. 13 - With Great Privilege Comes Great Responsibility
Wednesday Oct 13, 2021
Wednesday Oct 13, 2021
Cassidy Miles (co-host; She/Her) embarks on a topic that is often misunderstood. Dig in and find out why. Podcast guest, Dr. Jason DeBoer (He/Him) of the Illinois Natural History Survey joins in the conversation.
The article we reference in the episode is found here: https://www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/fall-2018/what-is-white-privilege-really
Quote mentioned in the podcast:
“We need to be clear that there is no such thing as giving up one’s privilege to be ‘outside’ the system. One is always in the system. The only question is whether one is part of the system in a way that challenges or strengthens the status quo. Privilege is not something I take and which therefore have the option of not taking. It is something that society gives me, and unless I change the institutions which give it to me, they will continue to give it, and I will continue to have it, however noble and equalitarian my intentions.”
− Harry Brod, “Work Clothes and Leisure Suits: The Class Basis and Bias of the Men’s Movement,” in Men’s Lives, ed. Michael S. Kimmel and Michael Messner (New York: Macmillan, 1989), 280.

141 - Saving Colorado‘s Greenback Cutthroat Trout With Dr. Kevin Rogers
Sunday Sep 26, 2021
Sunday Sep 26, 2021
About this Episode
Co-host Anders Halverson talks with Dr. Kevin Rogers about efforts to save the Greenback Cutthroat Trout on Colorado’s Eastern Slope. Think of it as story the producers of CSI Miami would write, if they were fortunate enough to be fisheries biologists. There’s extinction (or maybe not?). There’s resurrection (twice!). Just when you think you have it figured out, another clue from a dusty library or a PCR machine sends you off in an entirely different direction. And of course, it ends on a cliffhanger.
About Kevin Rogers, Ph.D.
Dr. Rogers has a pair of undergraduate degrees from University of Colorado, Boulder as well as a Masters and Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He has worked for Colorado Parks and Wildlife for the last 26 years, spending the last 18 as the state’s native cutthroat trout research scientist. His research efforts cover all aspects of cutthroat trout conservation and management, but have recently focused on resolving the convoluted taxonomy of our native trout. Dr. Rogers can be reached at kevin.rogers@state.co.us.
You can find out more about his research at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Cutthroat Trout website.

D&I Podcast Ep. 12 - Financial disparity in fisheries science
Wednesday Sep 22, 2021
Wednesday Sep 22, 2021
Deon Kerr (co-host) dives into an important topic when it comes to equality in fisheries. Financial barriers are real. Financial disparities can be a primary deterrent to entering the fisheries profession. Dr. Brian Sidlauskas, associate professor and curator of fishes at Oregon State University, joins the conversation and brings in examples of how employers and academic faculty can support their employees and students (graduate and undergraduate) to overcome financial barriers.
